Cheap car insurance for young drivers – unfortunately even the cheapest car insurance for young drivers is going to still be relatively expensive, so don’t hold your breath!
However, I’ve done some researching and have found the following insurance companies to be either cheap compared to most of the others, or to have special insurance aimed at young drivers – but do your own research because different circumstances will mean different prices!
Also check out my tips at the bottom of this page to see how you can cut your car insurance premiums.

I’ve included Aviva because that’s the insurance company I use and they gave me a much better quote than anyone else I tried – and I spent days ringing around and filling in online forms!
I’ve spoken to a few other people who also found Aviva to do pretty cheap car insurance for young drivers, so they are well worth a try in my opinion – it could save you hours of messing about. |

I always used to think of Endsleigh as a really old fashioned company, probably because of their old style logo, but as you can see they now have a trendy new one!
Endsleigh have a range of insurance policies aimed specifically at young drivers, so they are also well worth trying. I like insurance companies that try and cater for people who’ve just passed their test. |

The Co-operative (or Co-op as my mum calls it) have been doing car insurance for a while now, and they too have special insurance aimed at young and new drivers.
While all car insurance for young drivers is going to be relatively expensive, you’d hope that these companies that go out of their way to target young drivers would be competitive against all of the rest of them. |

I’ve included Admiral because they have a multicar scheme.
While a lot of people get their parents to insure their car and put them as a named driver, this is actually illegal and is classed as insurance fraud. A better idea might be to go for a multicar scheme where you get discounts for having more than 1 car on the policy. |
Tips for getting cheaper car insurance for young drivers
As I’ve already mentioned, most people get their parents to insure their car for them and then put them as a named driver.
However, this is totally illegal and is classed as insurance fraud!
If you had an accident and they found out, then your insurance would be invalid. You can also get fined and up to 6 points on your (or your parents?) licence as well!
There are however a number of ways to reduce your car insurance costs, here are some ideas for you:
- Go for the Pass Plus course before you look for car insurance. Having PassPlus can reduce your car insurance costs tremendously, saving you Hundreds of Pounds.
- Make sure that you have security fitted to your car, this can reduce the cost of car insurance by a reasonable amount.
- Make sure that you keep your car secure overnight – parked on a driveway or in a garage is best.
- Cut out parts of the car insurance you don’t need, like replacement vehicle cover, and foreign country cover.
- Play around with the excess and see how different amounts effect the overall price you are quoted.
- Make sure that you give an accurate indication of your mileage – the more you travel the more likely you are to have an accident.
- Be careful how you word your job description. Some salespeople for example cover a lot of miles and could pay higher car insurance prices – you don’t want to be paying extra because you didn’t make it clear you’re a salesperson at a shop 1/2 mile from your front door!
- Don’t just take out your insurance with your current insurance company (many people do this) – shop around!
- Haggle! Don’t just accept the first price an insurance company gives you, haggle wit them, you’ll be amazed at how easily you can get them to reduce their prices – car insurance is a very cut-throat business, and they want your business!
Following these 9 simple steps could easily cut your car insurance costs by over 30%, saving you a small fortune – in many cases it could save you over £1000!
One other thing I’d like to mention is car insurance comparison sites, and why you should avoid them.
I can’t help but think that they’re a bit of a rip-off really.
If you use them you’ll see that there are a few insurance companies that you recognise, and loads that you don’t. That’s because all of the smaller ones are owned by the same big names that you do know.
All that they do is to decide at the beginning of each week which of their insurance companies will offer the best deal, and then make that one a bit cheaper.
You think you’re getting the best price because the comparison site has compared all of those insurance companies for you – but in reality following the steps above and contacting a few insurers directly will get you a far better price than you’ll ever get from a comparison site.
They’re taking advantage of the fact that most people are too lazy to fill in a couple of forms or make a phone call or two.
They’re in it to make money, not to provide cheap car insurance for young drivers!
