Driving and Alcohol

The topic of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol is something that comes up a lot and something you will see a lot of whilst watching tv and the news etc.

It is something that many of us will not appreciate until we can drive and realise just how much concentration is required to be safe on the road. As young drivers, the thought and effort required to not drink and drive is greater, as we all like a pint or two, and a lot of us feel invisible and that alcohol does not affect us, that’s far from the truth. Keeping up with your eyesight

Several surveys have been conducted to highlight the problem of drivers who have poor eyesight. Many of us do not keep up with eyesight checks, simply because many of us can’t be bothered or believe our sight is good enough, the fact is that if you don’t get your eyesight checked,  you could be posing a danger to yourself and other road users. Choosing the Right Car

As a new driver, the right car choice is essential if you are to gain in confidence and become a safe driver.

Many people who pass their test cannot wait to drive and simply buy the first cheap car they buy without thinking about anything else but getting behind the wheel and going for a drive.

The right car choice is a pretty big part of becoming a safe driver if you didn’t realise it at first. Many things can affect your driving and the financial side of things also, these are explained below: [Read more...]

Had a Bad Lesson?

It is almost certain that when you are learning you will have one or two ‘bad’ driving lessons. It happens to everyone who is learning to drive and it certainly happened to me.

You must remember that you are learning, and it is not easy to drive! As with anything new, you need to pick up the correct skills, but not only this, you need experience, and this is why you often make the errors that can make you feel down.

I often compared this to learning to ride a bike, I don’t know of anyone who has never fallen off a bike, and it is the same with driving, I don’t think there is anyone out there who has never stalled a car! [Read more...]

Driving Lessons Structure

driving lessons structure

The structure of your lessons ultimately comes down to the instructor that you choose to learn with, however saying this, it is almost certain that things will happen in the same pattern as it does for everyone.

Obviously there is no instructor that makes you do reverse park before you have driving on the road for an hour or two.

Below I will explain different aspects that you will have worked on during your lessons, if you havent covered any of the below points, then you should mention them to your instructor before you go in for you test: [Read more...]

So You Think YOU’RE a Bad Driver?

Okay, so maybe you think you’ve had a bad driving lesson or driving test, well don’t worry, you’re a driving genius compared to these two (they’ve passed their tests already remember)!

The first one manages to completely demolish her car – just look at all of that black smoke! The second one – well, God only knows how they manage it!

PS – I don’t know if they are women drivers or not as claimed on You Tube, they could just as probably be men – there are plenty of bad male drivers out there!

Origins of the UK Driving Test

The driving test was first introduced in the mid 30’s and has stayed pretty much the same up until today.

Everything in the test was produced for a reason and test certain aspects of the car and driver, not just the driver!

Many people today think that the test has got much harder, however this is not the case, the environment and the way of life has dramatically changed which in turn has made the driving test more difficult. [Read more...]

The Top 10 Reasons People Fail Their Practical Test

Here are the top 10 reasons that people fail their practical tests, as reported by the DSA for the 12 months to Jan 2004 (I bet you they’re still the most common reasons):

  1. Observation at junctions – ineffective observation and judgement
  2. Reverse parking – ineffective observation or lack of accuracy
  3. Use of mirrors – not checking or not acting on the information
  4. Moving away – ineffective observation or control when moving away
  5. Use of signals – not given, not cancelled or misleading signals
  6. Incorrect positioning – at roundabouts, lanes and bends
  7. Reversing around a corner – ineffective observation or lack of accuracy
  8. Lack of steering control – steering too early or leaving it too late
  9. Turn round in road – ineffective observation or lack of accuracy
  10. Inappropriate speed – travelling too slowly

So, make sure that you pay attention to these and you should improve your odds of passing dramatically!!!

Thanks to Matt at MSM driving school in Berkshire for the heads up on these.
